Dr Who christmas Special - spoiler warning
« on: August 26, 2010, 03:12:08 pm »

Filming on the new Doctor Who Christmas Special only started on 12th July but already anticipation is running rife as to what we might since in the festive treat. The BBC have given us a few little nuggets of information. Here is what we know so far:
Katherine Jenkins is in Doctor Who

The delectable welsh warbler, opera diva Katherine Jenkins will star in this Doctor Who special. Whether she will feature in some sort of cameo role or be a major character we do not yet know. However it is apparent that Katherine is a big Doctor Who fans and that this is an ambition fulfilled for her. Let us hope she makes more of an impact than Kylie managed in “Voyage of the Damned”.
Michael Gambon is in Doctor Who

Mr Gambon’s acting CV makes for impressive reading. Older television viewers will know him for his infamous role in “The Singing Detective”. Younger viewers will perhaps more readily recognize him as Albus Dunbledore in the Harry Potter franchise. You might even know he has part of the Top Gear track named in his honour! His role will surely be pivotal in the episode in some form or another.

Now that the latest series of Doctor Who is over in the UK – all has been relatively quiet on the Doctor Who news front. However, a few tidbits about the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas Special (2010) and series 6 have begun to leak out.

Don’t read on unless you’ve already seen the Series 5 finale.

Filming for the Christmas Special will begin July 12-16 in Swansea. The episode is being written by Steven Moffat and will feature both a former cast member of legendary British soap Eastenders and a Hollywood actor. There are also rumors of a “big, big name playing a massive role”, which likely describes one of those two other people. “Silence”, the major arc of series six, is mentioned at least once in the special, and we hear again from the creepy voice first heard in the TARDIS during The Pandorica Opens – apparently this voice still has some control of the TARDIS.

As for the story itself, this is still up in the air. It was originally thought the special would be set in 1500′s England, possibly involving Henry VIII. However, the lines about the Egyptian goddess and the Orient Express in space at the end of The Big Bang were an absolute last minute addition, so they may represent the new direction for the special.

Either way, there are rumors the special will have undertones of A Christmas Carol – something that’s been rumored since at least The Runaway Bride, but still – complete with a possible appearance by a past Doctor as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Those Doctors under consideration for this are supposedly Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, and David Tennant, which makes sense when you consider the other Doctors’ ages, appearances, or total unwillingness to ever have anything to do with the show ever again. (Also, a few of them are dead, which I guarantee is the only thing stopping Patrick Troughton.) This is probably all nonsense anyway, but here’s hoping for a little multi-Doctor goodness.

Moving onto series six, Rory will indeed remain as the Doctor’s companion, and in fact will have “loads more to do”, which makes me very happy indeed. Amy has “a biiiig secret to get off her chest (nothing bad)!” Obviously, the semi-literal way to interpret that wording is that she’s pregnant, but I kind of hope that’s not the case. Most importantly, River Song is definitely back, but with a big difference: when we see her in series six, it’ll be the first time she meets the Doctor.

And here’s who is reportedly writing for the next series: Steven Moffat (of course), Neil Gaiman (probably Episode 3), Paul Cornell, Tom MacRae, Phil Ford (who might be handling the non-Moffat two-parter), and Rob Shearman. As always, please treat these message-board reports as rumor until they’re confirmed via official channels.

Stephen Moffat spoke to the folks over at Den of Geek and let out some details as to what to expect in series 6 as they being production.

They said:

Show boss Steven Moffat has been answering that very question, telling Doctor Who Confidential that two of the big story mysteries will be resolved.

“What is that, who is that, who are the silence, what’s coming?” teased Moffat. “The whole point of the silence is next series. Also, River Song … who is she really? That’s what we’re going to find out next year,” he said.

Also, Steven Moffat has revealed to Digital Spy just how far into planning series six he is. “Not far enough, I think is the answer to that!” he told the site. “I’ve got lots of plans – plans are not nearly as useful as scripts, I find – so I’d like to have more scripts and fewer plans. We’re not quite as ahead of the game as we were last time. But it’s fine.”

It’s unclear yet how many episodes of series six Moffat himself will be writing, but that should become clear in the months ahead, along with the identity of some of the other scribes working on the next series of the show.

The One Show played host to guests Matt Smith and Karen Gillan last Friday, during which the pair refused to give away any details of this year's Christmas Special. (however they do give some bits and pieces away if you watch it.)

However, a promotional photo for the episode was revealed (see below).

The Christmas Promo pic:

2011 Dirrectors:
(Thursday, August 26, 2010)
Doctor Who directors Richard Clark and Adam Smith will return to the series in 2011.

Both are listed in the online CV of new Production Designer Michael Pickwoad. They are listed alongside Toby Haynes who is already confirmed as director of the 2010 Christmas Special.

Richard Clark directed Gridlock and The Lazarus Experiment, both originally shown in 2007 as part of the third series since the revival. He has also worked on episodes of Life on Mars, The Whistleblowers and Gunrush.

Adam Smith directed the Eleventh Doctor's first story, The Eleventh Hour as well as the Weeping Angels two-part story The Time of Angels / Flesh and Stone. Away from Doctor Who he has worked on Little Dorrit and Skins.

Production on the next series of Doctor Who is due to continue next week, with a read-through of the Neil Gaiman story.

Series Six to be broken up in two halves?

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Steven Moffat has announced that the next series of Doctor Who will be split in two with a 'gamechanging' cliffhanger in episode 7.

"The split series is hugely exciting because viewers will be treated to two premieres, two finales and more event episodes. For the kids it will never be more than a few months to the next Doctor Who! Easter, Autumn, Christmas!!"

The BBC press office describe the split transmission as the result of a request from Steven Moffat to write a new Doctor Who story arc which involves a big plot twist in the middle of the series. "By splitting the series Moffat plans to give viewers one of the most exciting Doctor Who cliffhangers and plot twists ever, leaving them waiting, on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens."

Cause aparently he is playing that character some how some way in this special. This news hit everywhere today an where as I'm sceptical even Den of the Geek is reporting it. Only time will tell but I think it's crazy, even IMDB is reporting this is not a hack job. Most are pretty outraged that he's appearing in the show but he made a public out cry last year on the Graham Norton show to be in it, so we can only speculate how this is going down.

I do hope it's false.

As with the gap between the series and the Christmas Special we once more have the Sarah Jane Adventures to tide us over. Sarah Jane began this week but a major change to Doctor Who cannon is coming soon!

I'm not sure how I feel about this...

Just last week rumours suggested that the Doctor Who regeneration limit would be addressed in the fourth series of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The Guardian now claims that the limit won’t just be extended, but removed entirely in a throwaway line of dialogue!

Says their article (Death of the Doctor spoilers),

Quote
Fans have always thought that the 13th doctor would be the last, thanks to a 1976 Doctor Who episode, The Deadly Assassin revealing for the first time the regeneration limit. But a passing comment in a children’s television programme later this month is set to rewrite history and cast the Doctor, iconic hero of the world’s most successful and longest-running science fiction series, as immortal.

The moment comes in the CBBC spin-off show, The Sarah Jane Adventures, which stars former companion Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. Matt Smith, who plays the current Doctor Who, guest stars in a two-part episode called The Death of the Doctor, to be screened on October 25 and 26. While the Doctor and Clyde Langer, played by Daniel Anthony, are in the process of outwitting spooky vulture undertakers the Shansheeth, Clyde asks how many times he can regenerate. The Doctor indicates that there is no limit. The action continues.
However, another source at last night’s Death of the Doctor screening revealed the Doctor actually says he can regenerate 507 times. So there’s still a limitation, just a rather large one!

Either way, I think we now know what Steven Moffat meant when he said, “[The regeneration limit] is addressed in a very, very cheeky way by an old friend of mine”.

"Death of the Doctor" airs Monday and Tuesday the 25th and 26th of October!

Quote
Sarah Jane and Jo Grant pair up to rescue The Doctor after they are tricked into believing he has been killed, and invited to his funeral.

But the pair quickly realise the ceremony is a trap, and learn that a group of aliens called The Shansheeth have captured the Tardis, leaving the Time Lord stranded on a planet.

These vulture-like aliens then attempt to use a “memory weave” to connect with the pair’s brains and past thoughts, and learn how to unlock the time-travelling machine through their past experiences with The Doctor.

As they reminisce, viewers of the show will watch video flashbacks of previous Time Lords William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, whilst their iconic nemeses The Daleks, Sea Devils, Sontarans and Davros also make a return.
